Dentist in Phoenix, AZ explains how dental implants can improve your appearance

How Dental Implants Can Improve your Appearance in Phoenix area

Patients in Phoenix, AZ who have experienced tooth loss are often concerned about the appearance of their smiles. They may also be unhappy with their ability to eat and speak as well. Visiting dentists such as Drs. Paul Nielson and Timothy Schmidt is the best way to learn about the options available for smile enhancement. Our team will explain how dental implants are one of the best ways in which patients can improve the appearance and functionality of their smiles following the loss of one or more teeth.

Understanding the goal of dental implants

Dental implants are one of several options for tooth replacement but is often preferred over alternatives such as dental bridges and dentures. This is because these tooth root replacements, made of titanium, can be a versatile solution for the smile. They have many benefits including:

  • Longevity
  • Natural appearance
  • Improved functionality
  • Versatility
  • Affordability
  • Easy care

Dental implants are the “gold standard” in tooth replacement. They are best at managing the loss of one or more teeth. The small screw-like apparatus is inserted into the bone of the jaw during oral surgery and left to heal. During this time, osseointegration occurs, which stimulates the growth of bone around the implant, which can help solidify the restoration into the smile. Dental implants are then restored over the top, and may be covered with a dental crown, a dental bridge, or a denture, depending on the needs of the patient.

How do dental implants improve appearance?

Dental implants fill the spaces where there are missing teeth, which can impact the ability of a patient to eat, speak, and smile with confidence. When these areas are filled, patients have improved self-esteem as these restorations look completely natural. Many people don’t’ realize that patients with implants have these dental restorations in their smiles. The restoration made for placement over the implant is made to the color, size, and shape specifications of the dentist who will ensure it blends in seamlessly with the smile, enhancing the appearance.

Who is a candidate for dental implants?

Dental implants sound like a wonderful solution for most of our patients. However, it is important for patients to understand that the placement of dental implants is only beneficial for those who are appropriate candidates. Determining candidacy for dental implants requires the dentist to take x-rays and evaluate the health of the jaw bone. Patients who have enough jaw bone for placement may proceed with these services, though patients who do not may want to ask about alternatives or learn more about the use of bone grafting for preparing the smile for treatment. Dental implants are often successful and allow patients the chance to improve their smile for a lifetime!

How do I care for a dental implant?

Dental implants require no different care from the natural teeth. Patients should be vigilant in brushing, flossing, and caring for their smile in the same way they always have. This is essential as it maintains the health of the oral cavity and can reduce the risk of periodontal disease developing. Periodontal disease is an infection that can impact the smile greatly by causing tooth, bone, and gum loss. This, in turn, can cause the dental implant to become loose and fail. To maintain a healthy smile, patients are urged to visit their dentist at least twice a year for a cleaning and evaluation by our team.

How much do dental implants cost?

There are many factors that need to be considered when patients are thinking about improving their smile with dental implants. This includes the cost of treatment. Most patients who are interested in dental implants will find that they are a smart investment. Though more expensive than alternative options, they require little to no special care and can last a lifetime, while other options need routine replacement.
