Sedation

Can Nitrous Oxide Sedation Help Me Feel Relaxed During My Dental Visit?

One method of dental sedation available at Life Smiles Dental Care in Phoenix, Arizona, is that of nitrous oxide sedation. Nitrous oxide sedation has become a popular solution for individuals who have mild to moderate dental anxiety. It can also be used in patients with special needs, concerns about their gag reflex, or spending extensive periods in the dental chair for complex procedures. Drs. Paul Nielson, Timothy Schmidt, and Jared Bishop of Life Smiles Dental Care can educate you on nitrous oxide’s advantages and help you better understand its place in the dental office. Sedation dentistry, or relaxation dentistry, is just an appointment away with our caring team of professionals ready to make your next visit a positive experience!

How does nitrous oxide sedation work?

Nitrous oxide sedation, also known to many as laughing gas, is both a safe and effective way of reducing dental anxiety during simple or complex dental services and procedures. During nitrous oxide sedation, you breathe in a mixture of both oxygen and nitrous oxide through a mask that fits over your nose. This gas is odorless and colorless and helps to relax your body and mind so that you can have the procedure done without feeling anxious or scared. Even those with mild anxieties may find that they are completely at ease and relaxed during everything from a dental cleaning to a complex full mouth rehabilitation treatment process.

Do I need nitrous oxide sedation?

Most patients associated nitrous oxide sedation with nervousness about visiting the dental chair. However, it has other benefits, too.

  • Nitrous oxide sedation can help to reduce discomfort or pain associated with some procedures, making it ideal for those who may be especially sensitive.
  • Since nitrous oxide often wears off quickly after discontinuing the gas, you can resume your regular activities without any lingering effects.
  • Nitrous oxide can be used for patients with strong gag reflexes who might find spending time in the dental chair uncomfortable.
  • Patients with certain special needs may also benefit from nitrous oxide sedation. Those with autism, special needs, Down syndrome, or those who are extremely young can all receive the sedative to help them complete their dental treatment without worry or anxiety.
